Use tools such as Carbon Copy Cloner, or Super Duper (my preference) for making an identical copy of a drive onto another - if you try to add another source drive using these, it can get messy, and may well overwrite any existing files or folders if you have any with the same names.Ĭarbon Copy Cloner handles selected items, not just entire disks. It's not copy/paste that you need either, it's drag and drop.Īll you need to do is open a window for the source and destination drives, select all the folders/files for copying, and drag them onto the destination drive (create new folders if needed for organising). In this case CCC isn't what you need, it's for copying an entire drive onto another to create two identical drives (hence the name).

What is the advantage of using Carbon Copy Cloner for purpose of transferring large files or individual large folders? Should I invest into a Carbon Copy Cloner, or just use copy/paste entire drive content? Will transfer and combine several HD's with photo files onto a larger one, than reformat the old one and use it for new photos. I set up both apps though to back up the same files in different places.I am just about to clean up my collection of external USB Hard Drives.

I do have both TimeMachine and CrashPlan running in the background. If you want to back up the HD1-LR by using another backup app (like my favorite CrashPlan), you can have the additional backup app also running as a background task and dedicated to backing up only those files that change on HD1-LR. TimeMachine app backs up everything mounted to your Mac except those file and volumes that you specifically exclude on the options panel. Time Machine runs only one backup process to one backup destination at a time though you can have more than one local backup destination. The other thing that you can do with TimeMachine is alternate backups between the My Book external hard drive and another designated Backup drive. Whenever the external hard drive (HD1-LR) is present Time Machine will backup any changes. You can Add the external hard drive (HD1-LR) to the Time Machine back up to backup everything including the external hard drive (HD1-LR) to My Book external hard drive. Sorry that's not the way Time Machine works.
